Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs theory applied to  HR in 2021

Abraham Maslow’s theory argues that humans have a series of needs, some of which must be met before a human can turn their attention towards others. In 1943 paper titled “A Theory of Human Motivation” Maslow theorized that human decision-making is undergirded by a hierarchy of psychological needs. From the bottom of the hierarchy upwards, the needs are:

                                                Physiological

                                                Safety

                                                Love and belonging

                                                Esteem

                                                Self-actualization

Maslow’s hierarchy can be divide into two different types of levels: they are

                   D-needs

Which motivates people to meet those needs, once satisfied, the need goes away, and the person can focus on other needs.

                   B-needs

It is the desire to gain something intangible for the self. To meet these needs is to reach self-actualization.

People are paid employment, and it is instructive, with Maslow’s theory acting as a periscope, to take a closer look at work and what Maslow’s theory says about how human nature influences people’s behavior at work. No need to explain how performing your best can only accelerate the trajectory of your career.

A recent survey found 75% of people scored high on levels of happiness, but low on meaning. Research from the Energy Project also revealed 50% of respondents lacked meaning at work. The study found employees who found meaning in their work were more engaged and more likely to stay with the company. Begins with Maslow’s hierarchy, we can create a place to work where people can do meaningful work and ensure that we can build a space where all of the employees’ needs are being met!

Appreciation of what they have, what they have been given, accepting and gracious of what they cannot change, authentic, filled with purpose in their lives, grounded in reality, letting as little bias their perceptions as possible, principled, and are guided by their principles in building meaningful lives in the 21st century, we should also determine our values. A Stanford study linked happiness to people who took more from others, and connected meaningfulness to people who gave more.

While dated, Maslow’s theory is useful for both personal development and workplace growth. By identifying what human need and what drives and motivates people, employers and employees can develop mutually beneficial relationships and positive environments conducive to work.

Do you think Maslow’s hierarchy is still applicable in 2021?

  1. Maslow's theory has been teaching us since our school hood. In my opinion Maslow's theory will continue to be used not only in the past but also in the future with various changes. Maslow's hierarchy provides a basic path for self-improvement. Originally employment fell into the Safety category, but today it is relevant to upper levels of the pyramid. The world is facing an unexpected situation. However Roy, B.D. explained Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs in post COVID - 19 as follows:
Self-actualization needs – the limited infrastructure and communication channels affected
Esteem needs – It has been compromised severely. Managers and peers
Belonging needs – the flow of communication is compromised.
Safety Needs/ physiological needs – anxiety, stress over the job security, future, uncontrolled and unorganized work environment. (https://blog.vantagecircle.com/maslows-hierarchy-of-needs-in-employee-engagement/)

  2. Maslow's theory is useful for both organizational and personal growth. Employers and employees can develop a mutual relationship by identifying human needs and motivational drivers. This theory seems still relevant for 2021 but it doesn't capture individuals wholly. The physiological and safety needs look relevant but other levels may reflect the cultural values.

  4. The biggest advantage of Maslow theory of motivation is that it is very simple to understand and even layman can understand and relate to this theory because we all go through one or other stage of needs pyramid during our lifetime.

However there are limitations to Maslow's theory, which is a major problem with hierarchy-of-needs theory is that it cannot be verified empirically, because there is no proper method to measure accurately how satisfied one level of need must be before the next higher need becomes operative. Maslow considered only a narrow segment of the human population.

  5. Due to this covid era people again start from the bottom line from the Maslow's theory and There’s no need to discuss the absolute chaos of 2020 – punctuated by a global pandemic. In the HR world, we learned so many lessons – and had to change strategies quickly without our usual luxury of research, analysis, proposal and approvals. We had to move – fast. Foremost in our minds was the safety, health and security of our employees. Definitely a gargantuan task. In every organization, in every industry, the new “C” word took center stage. And for the most part, we survived, thrived and succeeded.
Our number one lesson? We couldn’t expect our employees to engage with our companies and with their jobs until we were able to meet the basic human need of safety.

  6. Generally, a person beginning their career will be very concerned with physiological needs such as adequate wages and stable income and security needs such as benefits and a safe work environment. We all want a good salary to meet the needs of our family and we want to work in a stable environment.

Employees whose lowest level needs have not been met will make job decisions based on compensation, safety, or stability concerns. Also, employees will revert to satisfying their lowest level needs when these needs are no longer met or are threatened

  7. Maslow's theory is applicable to both understanding how employees feel involved and how the hierarchy needs to be sustained. the standard of living of a well-paid job includes being able to provide basic necessities such as health care and housing without fear of extreme poverty. These people need these security requirements to be met in order to be satisfied. They are dependent on the recognition and the feeling of accomplishment from their colleagues to remain motivated.

  8. Good topic .I would like to mention that Maslow's hierarchy of needs is relevant to organizational theory as both are concerned with human motivation. Understanding what people need and how people's needs differ is a crucial part of effective management.

Modern motivation has moved on from Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs alone. However, this simple motivation tool remains vital and it will assist HR professionals achieve several organizational goals, such as improved staff retention and employee engagement, as long as they understand how to apply it in a practical manner and regularly adapt to satisfy their employees’ changing needs.
